I'm a recovering Mormon. My history will be explained in the first post to this journal, but all you really need to know is that I am an atheist because I want people to do better things with their lives. I understand (first hand, intimately, powerfully) the allure of a belief system, but I've found it empty. God doesn't fill a hole in my heart, but doing good does. I know that those that have left me here to carry on wouldn't want me to spend all of my time wishing I could talk to them. My brother would want me to make art and oppose the establishment, my grandmother would want me to help a new generation of children live happy healthy lives. This is a mission I've been on for many years, and this journal represents an effort to reconcile some of the disparate pieces of my personality, my beliefs (yes, I have some), and to offer my advice toward a better future.
I don't expect that anyone will read this, and I don't expect that anyone who stumbles upon it will have much good to say about anything they do happen to cast their eyes upon. All I ask is that if you read this, and if you pay attention, that you take my suggestions for what they are: logical conclusions based on simple observations. I don't begrudge you your beliefs: I was there once. All I want is a better world based on thought rather than tradition--a world in which we all inspect our dogmatic inclinations with an eye for what we could be doing with our time and what good could come of it.
